Porsche 911 GT3 R Sweeps PWC UTAH SprintX, Two Sprint Podiums. Udell Widens GT Cup lead.

Porsche celebrated its return to the Utah Motorsports Campus (UMC), formerly Miller Motorsports Park, in strong form this weekend. Four Pirelli World Challenge races saw the Porsche 911 GT3 R return to victory lane in the top GT class in the twin SprintX races under very unlikely circumstances. Porsche factory driver Patrick Long (Manhattan Beach, California) captured back-to-back third-place finishes in the standard sprint race format to take the lead in the GT Drivers' Championship. Meanwhile, GT Cup class championship leaders Sloan Urry (Park City, Utah) and Alex Udell (The Woodlands, Texas) split one-make class events in Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars. GTA class combatant Michael Schein (Glen Cover, New York) was third and second respectively on Saturday and Sunday.

SprintX. Porsche 911 GT3 R.

Two, 60-minute races at UMC made up Rounds Three and Four of the new SprintX format. The class takes on several attributes of endurance racing including a two-driver per car entry and a tire change. The events run ten-minutes longer than the popular "sprint" format of North America's premier sprint sports car racing series.

Calvert Dynamics entered the race with the No. 77 Porsche 911 GT3 R co-driven by Porsche specialist Andrew Davis (Athens, Georgia) and owner/driver Preston Calvert (Potomac, Maryland). The No. 14 GMG Porsche 911 GT3 R also was entered in the GT class with west-coast tuner James Sofronas (Villa Park, California) and Brent Holden (Newport Beach, California).

Everything changed on Friday morning when the Calvert Dynamics car had a fire in the engine compartment. The damage to the car was too severe to continue this weekend in the four races in which it was entered - Calvert was scheduled to race the car solo in the GTA class in the sprint races. Davis, who was behind the wheel at the time of the fire, was uninjured after bringing the car safely to a stop and assisting safety crews extinguish the flames before they consumed the whole car. Following the fire, Michael Lewis (Laguna Beach, California) approached Calvert about the pair using the No. 98 Calvert Dynamics 911 GT3 R in the two SprintX events. Lewis would continue to drive the car solo in the sprint format races as scheduled.

Calvert got off to a good start in the Porsche and maintained a top-five position before handing the car over to Lewis after the mandated 25-minute mark. The Porsche Young Driver Academy graduate then pushed to the end eventually closing on the No. 46 BMW, and overtaking it on the last lap to capture Calvert Dynamics first Pirelli World Challenge victory.

The Tooele, Utah-area racecourse was not finished rewarding the Phoenix Promotionsrun team for its dedication to the sport just yet. By virtue of setting the fastest race lap in Race 1, Lewis started from the pole position on Sunday afternoon. For the first ten minutes of the race Porsche 911 GT3 Rs ran one-two with Lewis leading Sofronas. The No. 14 GMG entry would fall back but Lewis would hold the lead through the single pit stop. An extended driver change erased much of the gap that the Californian had created for his amateur co-driver but Calvert drove like a pro holding off all challengers, including professional Michael Mills who spun the No. 46 BMW while attempting to pass the driver from Maryland. Calvert Dynamics now holds wins in the only two SprintX races they have entered. The No. 14 of Sofronas/Holden was fourth. Lewis is a fourtime PWC winner this season - the first two coming in the GT class at St. Petersburg, Florida earlier this year.

Sprint. Porsche 911 GT3 R.

The one-make GT Cup class pitted five Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars against oneanother. Racing to the exact specifications of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup Series, Porsche Young Driver Academy alumnae Udell and Urry have fought tooth-and-nail all season. Udell gained on Urry after the Utah-native suffered a non-motorsports related injury near mid-season. However, on his home track, Urry earned his way to victory lane in the No. 20 TruSpeed 911 GT3 Cup car in Race 1, Udell just behind in second. In Race 2, Urry sat on pole but an impressive overtaking move by Udell dropped the local back, Urry would later go off track and fell out of immediate contact with the GT Cup leaders to finish in fifth-place. Udell won Sunday increasing his point lead with races in Sonoma and Monterey, California coming in the fall. Local favorite McKay Snow (Lehi, Utah) made an impressive debut in the class leading early in Race 2 with the Wright Motorsports 911 GT3 Cup car.

"WA really solid weekend. It is timely after a rough Mid-Ohio, that we are putting behind us. This was about longevity, both Saturday and Sunday. Really Saturday, after getting hit by some very enthusiastic and optimistic drivers. We didn't have a corner of the car that we did not get stuffed into. So to come back Sunday with a clean race and back it up with two podiums and the championship lead feels really good."

Preston Calvert, Owner/Driver, Nos. 77 and 98 Calvert Dynamics Porsche 911 GT3 R.

"First, we were shocked after the fire on Friday. We were worried about Andrew and then realized he was out of the car. We had to watch a beloved racecar go up in flames and smoke. That was very hard. But we all went home and said that is racing. We came back and I had an offer from Michael to drive in SprintX with him today. We came to the track with a positive outlook. Michael did an incredible job to come back for the win. It's a pleasure to have drivers like Michael and Andrew Davis working with our team. We were overjoyed with the win and everyone was almost in tears due to the tough turnaround and very hard past 24 hours."

Michael Lewis, Driver, No. 98 Calvert Dynamic Porsche 911 GT3 R.

"Sunday was pretty busy for me. And Saturday I only got a few laps in the GT race. We pulled off again. It was all Preston at the end. He drove very clean and very solid. I had to come from behind on Saturday to win. Sunday, I just drove as hard as possible at the start and gained as large an advantage as possible. We set a pace as hard as we could. We had good tire management from the Porsche. I pushed hard and Preston made it happen at the end."

GT3 Cup Challenge Canada Closes on End of Season. Morad Expands GT3 Canada Platinum Cup Lead With Win, Second Place at GP3R.

Daniel Morad expanded his Platinum Cup championship lead to 13 points - his largest gap of the season - with just two rounds remaining in the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama after finishing second in Round 9 and winning Round 10 last weekend at the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières in Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

Morad, from Toronto, leads Scott Hargrove, 175-162, and will attempt to win his first Platinum Cup championship at Rounds 11 and 12 on Sept. 2-4 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario. Morad and Hargrove are past participants in the Porsche Young Driver Academy.

Hargrove, from Tsawwassen, British Columbia, won Round 9 on Saturday in the No. 28 OpenRoad Racing Porsche. It was his class-leading fifth victory of the season.

Hargrove made an aggressive pass of Morad's No. 17 Porsche Centre Oakville/Alegra Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car during Round 9 Saturday and drove away for the win.

But Morad, who started from pole in both races, never trailed in Round 10 Sunday on the 10-turn, 1.5207-mile (2.433 km) temporary street circuit.

Hargrove's title chances took a dent when he made contact with the No. 08 Wingho Racing Porsche driven by Gold Cup standout Martin Harvey while trying to lap Harvey and stay in touch with Morad. Harvey spun, and the ensuing damage to Hargrove's car caused him to stop on course with one lap remaining.

2014 Platinum Cup champion Hargrove continued and finished one lap down. He was assessed a time penalty for incident responsibility for the collision with Harvey and was credited with eighth place.

Tim Sanderson, from Pickering, Ontario, swept both races in the Platinum Masters class to pull to within four points of class leader and three-time reigning Platinum Masters champion Marco Cirone. Sanderson has won four consecutive rounds in the No. 07 Porsche Centre Oakville/Alegra Motorsports Porsche.

Shaun McKaigue, from Gilford, Ontario, closed in on his second career Gold Cup championship with two victories in the No. 34 Fiorano Racing Porsche. 2011 Gold Cu champion McKaigue leads Harvey in the standings, 114-106.

"I just want to keep my level of performance where it's at. I think if you look at last year, where we were in relation to this year, we're fighting for pole positions, race victories, we're leading practices. We're just constantly getting better and better. I'm constantly improving. I'm looking forward to our chances in the last race, although anything can happen, and we need Lady Luck on our side."

East Coast Debutante. Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport Popular in PCA.

With two events left in the 2016 season, the PCA Club Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport Trophy East series is wrapping up its successful inaugural year at Road America and Daytona International Speedway, respectively.

The semi-professional racing series, which provides a bridge for Porsche racers to climb to the professional ranks, highlights the spirit of PCA Club Racing and the skills of its drivers at major road racing venues east of the Rocky Mountains.

Drivers are competing in the new, track-only Cayman GT4 Clubsport racecar. The 385-horsepower, mid-engine racer, which features a sealed engine and transmission and a spec tire, is developed by Porsche Motorsport North America and based on the successful street-legal Cayman GT4 sports car.

Each event features three races. The first and second races are 30-minute sprint races. The third race is an "endurance" race lasting 80 minutes.

Championship and Masters class competitors receive points based on the finish in their respective divisions, with podium recognition for each of the top three drivers. Masters class is designated for drivers ages 57 and older.

Leading the Championship class this season is Keith Jensen, representing the Maverick PCA Region in his No. 51 NOLAsport Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport. Jensen leads the standings, 209-170, over David Baum, representing the Western Michigan PCA Region in the No. 24 Autometrics Motorsports entry.

Next up for the Cayman GT4 Clubsport Trophy East series is an event Sept. 3-5 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., followed by the season finale Oct. 21-23 at the iconic Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla.

West Coast Trophy Chase. Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport Strong Out West.

The Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA championship is celebrating its 10th anniversary season, which has been its biggest yet with robust grids and outstanding racing.

The 16-round championship is staged on eight race weekends, with all of the events being hosted on the West side of the country. The series visits Sonoma Raceway, Circuit of the Americas, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and the Utah Motorsports Campus. Each race weekend features two, 45-minute sprint races.

There are three classes, all of which race on Pirelli competition tires: Diamond (2014-present Porsche 911 GT3 Cup), Platinum (2010-2013 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Type 997) and the new for 2016 Silver Class, which features the Porsche Cayman GT4Clubsport. So far in 2016, the Silver Class competitors have covered just over 6,600 miles in racing competition since the Cayman GT4 Clubsport made its debut in March.

The 2016 season saw the Pirelli GT3 Cup Trophy USA add the Silver Class, utilizing the all-new Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport as the competition base. The new class has been very well received, averaging over 10 entries per weekend. Not only has it provided a great first step for new drivers to join in the Porsche racing family, it has added to the development of the GT3 pilots in the Diamond and Platinum classes with the multi-class racing experience.

Having raced in previous seasons as a support event for Formula 1 as well as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, the 2016 schedule has developed to reflect a focus on maximum track time for the drivers.

With Pirelli as a key series partner, the series just staged a double-header race weekend as part of the Pirelli World Challenge event at the Utah Motorsports Campus.

We have a dedicated driver coach at every event (Craig Stanton) as well as a great group of series partners that are supporting us. We hope that it will continue to grow, and we are excited about the opportunity that adding the Clubsport GT4 has created for us."
