Back In Class. Porsche Contingents Back In Action at Utah Motorsports Campus.

Pirelli World Challenge returns to competition this week at the Utah Motorsports Campus. The track formerly known as Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah, will host two, 50-minute GT, GTA and GT Cup class combined races and a pair of one-hour SprintX events. With the season nearing its conclusion - only two weekends and three races will remain after this weekend's rounds - the competition in the three classes in which Porsche competes continue to grow.

In the top GT class, Porsche factory driver Patrick Long (Manhattan Beach, California) continues to fight for his second series championship. North America's only "works" driver has won three races thus far in 2016, and will look to add rounds 16 and 17 to the tally in the No. 58 Porsche Consulting Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R. Long's former teammate, Michael Lewis, will be challenging for top-Porsche honors in the No. 98 Calvert Dynamics 911 GT3 R. The Laguna Beach, California-resident has two class wins to his record in 2016. James Sofronas (Villa Park, California) brings the No. 14 Porsche back for the sprint races in the GT class. The longtime owner of and driver for GMG has run selected races in 2016.

The GTA class uses an identical Porsche 911 GT3 R as those run in GT class. Leading the Porsche teams utilizing the new 911 GT3 R for the Amateur driver category is Michael Schein (Glen Cove, New York) who won the two most recent rounds of the class at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course driving the No. 16 Wright Motorsports entry. Preston Calvert (Potomac, Maryland) keeps the No. 77 911 GT3 R in the GTA category for the two rounds in Tooele, Utah for the second weekend in a row.

The one-make GT Cup class uses the 911 GT3 Cup variant of the iconic 911 shape. Leading the point championship on the back of strong performances in recent rounds is Alex Udell (The Woodlands, Texas) in the No. 17 GMG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. Udell's season-long pressure comes from fellow Porsche Young Driver Academy graduate Sloan Urry (Park City, Utah). Urry has piloted the No. 20 TruSpeed 911 GT3 Cup car throughout the season scoring multiple victories. Corey Fergus (Columbus, Ohio) in the No. 00 Motorsports Promotions Porsche is third in the championship chase while Alex Welch (Englewood, Colorado) returns to the class in the No. 08 GMG entry. Making his series debut will be McKay Snow (Lehi, Utah) in the No. 56 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. Snow is part of a longtime Porsche racing family. His Father, Martin, and Mother, Melanie, both hold major championship titles racing Porsche 911s.

SprintX

This weekend will also see the second-round of the first-year SprintX series. The series runs events 10-minutes longer than the standard Pirelli World Challenge events and, for this inaugural season, on the same weekends as the headliners. Competition is open to cars in all three categories in which Porsche competes GT, GTA and GT Cup and may use the same cars that are racing in the standard sprint events or cars solely focused on the two-driver style formula. Preston Calvert will campaign the No. 77 car, with co-driver Andrew Davis (Athens, Georgia), in the SprintX races to be held Saturday and Sunday as well as his solo seat in the sprint races. It is the first time for Calvert/Davis to participate in the class, which mimics several details of endurance racing including driver changes and a Pirelli tire change. Four other Porsches will also seek victory in the third and fourth rounds of the one-hour SprintX format of races. Brent Holden (Newport Beach, California) will campaign the No. 14 GMG Porsche 911 GT3 R in the GT class of the stand-alone races co-driving with Sofronas. GMG also enters two 911 GT3 Cup cars unique to the SprintX events in GT Cup class: the No. 15 entry of Kevin Westcott (Laguna Beach, California) and the No. 08 of Alex Welch (Engelwood, California). Both cars are finalizing their driver lineups.

Canadian Streets. Close GT3 Canada Platinum Cup Race Takes To Streets of Quebec.

The Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama championship is entering the home stretch this weekend at the Grand Prix of Trois-Rivières (GP3R) in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, as just four rounds remain in the season.

Rounds 9 and 10 - both 45-minute races - will take place on the 10-turn, 1.5207-mile (2.433 km) temporary street circuit during the 47th edition of the popular street race. Round 9 is scheduled for 11:10 a.m. (ET) Saturday, Aug. 13, with Round 10 at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 14.

2015 Platinum Cup runner-up Daniel Morad and 2014 Platinum Cup champion Scott Hargrove and are locked in a tense duel for the title this year. Hargrove leads Morad, 137-134.

Morad and Hargrove have split victories in the two rounds at each of the last two events, in early July at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International and in mid-July at Toronto. Hargrove has won four races this season in the No. 28 OpenRoad Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, while Morad has earned three victories in the No. 17 Porsche Centre Oakville/Alegra Motorsports Porsche.

Both Morad and Hargrove are past Porsche Young Driver Academy attendees.

Hargrove, from Tsawwassen, British Columbia, swept both rounds last season at GP3R and finished second in both rounds in 2014. But Morad, from Toronto, Ontario also has shown to be a street-circuit ace, as he has earned one victory on the temporary circuit at Toronto in 2015 and again this year.

There could be a spoiler this weekend in the race, too. 2015 Platinum Cup champion Chris Green is making only his second appearance of the season in the series in the No. 9 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche. Green has two career Platinum Cup victories at GP3R.

Marco Cirone will look to close in on his fourth consecutive Platinum Masters championship in the No. 88 Mark Motors Racing Porsche at GP3R. He has won five of the eight rounds this season to take a 152-144 lead over Tim Sanderson in the No. 07 Porsche Centre Oakville/Alegra Motorsports Porsche.

2011 Gold Cup champion Shaun McKaigue will continue his drive toward a second title in the class in the No. 34 Fiorano Racing Porsche. He leads Quebec native Martin Harvey, 114-106, in the standings.

The new Cayman GT4 Clubsport racecar will also compete at GP3R in the Silver Cup class.

Park Place Back On Podium. Porsche 911 Teams at Road American in IMSA WeatherTech.

On the storied Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the new Porsche 911 GT3 R scored a second-place in the GTD class at round eight of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Porsche works driver Jörg Bergmeister (Germany) and Patrick Lindsey (Santa Barbara, California) shared the cockpit of the 500 hp customer racer, which Porsche built for worldwide GT3 series based on the production 911 GT3 RS sports car. With the 911 GT3 R fielded by the American Porsche customer team Park Place Motorsports, this season the pair also secured a second-place at Detroit Belle Isle.

In the GTLM class, the most manufacturer-heavy category with five automobile brands, the Porsche 911 RSR run by the Porsche North America factory squad were on pace for a podium result with five minutes to go. In the most gripping race of the season so far, the crew managed to implement the insights gained during recent testing at the 4-mile race course, both in practice and qualifying, but all hopes for a top result fell short at the restart after the final caution phase. While fighting for victory, Nick Tandy (Great Britain) left the circuit in the No. 911 Porsche 911 RSR. With the reigning IMSA GT champion Patrick Pilet (France), who had snatched the lead spot after an excellent start off the line, the pair ultimately had to settle for seventh-place. Their team colleagues Earl Bamber (New Zealand) and Frédéric Makowiecki (France), who joined the others at the front during the first hour of racing, were also lost of a possible podium finish in the dramatic final phase. They crossed the finish line with the No. 912 Porsche 911 RSR in fourth-place.

Round Nine of IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship will be held on August 28 at VIRginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia.

Marco Ujhasi, Overall Project Manager GT Works Motorsport.

“What a fantastic race, which had it all. We put the pressure on right from the start and we could turn consistently fast laps. Everything that we had planned actually worked. A podium result would definitely have been possible. After the caution phase at the end we were very close to the front and Nick surprised the leader with a bold overtaking maneuver that could have handed him the victory. Unfortunately, there was not enough room for three cars at that particular spot, and the podium result that seemed so close was gone. All in all, this race was a ray of hope. We'll continue to fight. Congratulations to the Park Place Motorsports customer team on achieving second-place in the GTD class.”

Patrick Pilet, Driver, No. 911 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR.

“That was a very intense race. Nick's move just before the flag was actually great. We could have won. He was holding a solid position - but then he was forced off. In spite of everything, we can all be proud this weekend. We've made great progress in terms of performance. Of course we want to continue improving, but we can build on this for the next races.”

Nick Tandy, Driver, No. 911 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR.

“Obviously, I'm disappointed to have lost an almost certain podium position shortly before the finish. But the entire race was really tough with lots of contact. After the final caution phase, it would have been almost impossible to fit a piece of paper between the Ford, the Ferrari and me. I was determined to use my chance to win, which proved a little too ambitious and ended with my spin. But I see the many positive aspects. We had a good run right from practice to the qualifying and the race. Our lead underlined that we're on the right track.”

Earl Bamber, Driver, No. 912 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR.

“Despite everything, it was a good race. We won't give up and we'll take a lot of important insights from this. Our class is so competitive that you simply have to drive at the limit to have any sort of chance.”

Jörg Bergmeister, Driver, No. 73 Park Place Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R.

“That was a hard race. The podium came somewhat unexpectedly for us, but that makes it all the more fantastic. In the final phase I had resigned myself to finishing on fourth, but then two Audis in front of me made mistakes and, of course, I made the most of the situation.”

Fight for the GT3 Cup USA. Lazare, Mosing, Landy Sweep Road America in Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama.

Jesse Lazare, Jeff Mosing and Sebastian Landy completed sweeps of Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama competition last weekend at Road America, each earning victories in their respective classes in Round 10 on Sunday to book-end their wins in Round 9 on Saturday.

Lazare, from Montreal, earned his sixth and seventh victories of the season in the No. 21 Kelly-Moss Road and Race Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, both times beating teammate and series debutant Jake Eidson to victory.

Lucas Catania finished third in Round 10 in the No. 26 NGT Motorsport Porsche, while Andrew Longe rounded out the podium finishers in Round 9 in the No. 47 Wright Motorsports Porsche.

Lazare stretched his Platinum Cup championship lead to 173-147 - more than a race's worth of points - over Catania with six rounds remaining in the season.

“I am going race by race, and I enjoy trying to go for a victory," Lazare said. "I am going to push just as hard as everyone else, and I can't wait to be at VIR.”

Mosing won both Platinum Masters races in the No. 01 TOPP Racing Porsche for his fifth and sixth victories of the season. Fred Poordad placed second in both rounds in the No. 20 Wright Motorsports Porsche.

Bill Peluchiwski finished third in the No. 74 Kelly-Moss Road and Race Porsche in Round 10. David Baker placed third in Round 9 in the No. 56 TOPP Racing Porsche.

Mosing's sweep expanded his championship lead to five points over Poordad, 175-170.

Landy has five Gold Cup victories this year after his sweep at Road America in the No. 49 TPC Racing Porsche, more than any driver in the class this season.

Championship leader Michael de Quesada rebounded from an early elimination due to crash damage in Round 9 to finish second in Round 10 in his No. 31 Alegra Motorsports Porsche. Michael Levitas placed second in Round 9 in his No. 36 TPC Racing Porsche.

Philip Bloom, from New York, finished third in class in both rounds in the No. 11 Wright Motorsports Porsche.

Landy's weekend sweep tightened the Gold Cup championship standings. De Quesada leads with 170 points. Michael Levitas is second with 164, with Landy third at 160.

Rounds 11-12 are scheduled for Aug. 26-28 at VIRginia International Raceway in Danville, Virginia.
