Mean Streets of Toronto. Porsche GT3 Cup Canada Continues Season.

The tight race for the Platinum Cup championship will rage on among three young Canadian stars as the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama competes July 15-17 on one of the biggest stages in Canadian motorsport.

Just eight points separate Scott Hargrove, Daniel Morad and Zach Robichon entering Rounds 7 and 8 of the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA)-sanctioned Single-Make Series at Honda Indy Toronto, the Verizon IndyCar Series event on the streets of Toronto. The series starts the second half of its 12-round season in Canada’s largest city.

Round 7 is scheduled to start at 6:05 p.m. (ET) Saturday, July 16. Round 8 is scheduled for 12:40 p.m. Sunday, July 17. Practice is scheduled for Friday, July 15, with qualifying at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, July 16.

Hargrove, from Surrey, British Columbia, leads the Platinum Cup standings with 104 points in the No. 28 OpenRoad Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car. 2014 Platinum Cup champion Hargrove also has produced a series-high three victories in six starts this season.
The Toronto event will mark a third consecutive weekend of Porsche Cup competition for OpenRoad Racing in three countries for Hargrove, 21.

Hargrove won and finished second in the two rounds of combined Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA and Canada competition June 30-July 2 at Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, New York. Hargrove then traveled to Buriram, Thailand, and won and finished second in two rounds of Porsche Carrera Cup Asia competition July 9-10 at the Chang International Circuit.

At Toronto, Daniel Morad will look to gain ground on Hargrove in the No. 17 Porsche Centre Oakville/Alegra Motorsports Porsche. Morad, from Toronto, won Round 5 at Watkins Glen and finished second to Hargrove in Round 6. Morad also won Round 1 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP).

Morad, 26, is second in Platinum Cup points with 99, just five behind Hargrove.

Past history is no indication of whether Hargrove and Morad will prevail this weekend. Both earned a victory in two rounds last season on the streets of Toronto.

Rookie Robichon, 24, has impressed this season with consistency and speed in the No. 78 Mark Motors Racing Porsche. He won Round 2 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and has finished third in four of his other five starts.

Robichon, from Ottawa, is third in the Platinum Cup championship with 96 points.

A spoiler to Hargrove, Morad and Robichon could emerge this weekend on the 11-turn, 1.755-mile (2.824 km) temporary street circuit.

Pfaff Motorsports plans to enter its No. 9 Porsche for reigning Platinum Cup champion Chris Green, who will make his season debut in the Canadian series at Toronto. Green, from Montreal, is running a limited schedule of Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama races this season and earned his first victory in that series on July 1 at Watkins Glen, finishing third overall behind Hargrove and Morad.

Another driver who will contend for a podium position this weekend is three-time reigning Platinum Masters champion Marco Cirone.

Cirone, from Toronto, leads the class again this season by 12 points over Tim Sanderson, with five victories in six starts. He also is fourth in the Platinum Cup standings in the No. 88 Mark Motors Racing Porsche, with a second-place finish in Round 4 at Montreal and a third-place finish in Round 2 at CTMP.

Series veteran Etienne Borgeat, from Montreal, will look for his first podium finish of the season in the No. 2 GT Racing Porsche at Toronto. He is fifth in the standings with 71 points.

Valerie Chiasson also will attract attention at Toronto in her No. 27 GT Racing Porsche. Chiasson, from Mont-Tremblant, Quebec, is the first female full-season competitor in the six-year history of the series.

In the Gold Cup class, Shaun McKaigue will look to continue his resurgent season. 2011 Gold Cup champion McKaigue, from Gilford, Ontario, leads the class with 78 points and three victories in the No. 34 Fiorano Racing Porsche.

Bruno Chapinotti, from Bowmanville, Ontario, is second with 72 points and a victory in the No. 03 DFC Motorsport Porsche.

Martin Harvey, from Berthierville, Quebec, is third in points with 66 in the No. 08 Wingho Racing Porsche. But Harvey is carrying momentum into Toronto after winning the Canadian Gold Cup class in both combined rounds at Watkins Glen. He also swept both rounds last season at Toronto.

The Silver Cup class, featuring the new Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport racecar, returns for its first two rounds since the season opener May 20-22 at CTMP.

Andrew Danyliw, from Toronto, won Rounds 1 and 2 on Victoria Day Weekend in the No. 38 SCB Racing Porsche. Gerald Panneton, from Terra Cotta, Ontario, finished second in both races in the No. 57 Pfaff Motorsports Porsche.

Strategic Defense. Porsche Approach Focused on Strengths at Mosport.

Round Six of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, the No. 912 Porsche 911 RSR fielded by the Porsche North America factory squad secured sixth-position in the GTLM class. On the ultra-fast racetrack at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, Earl Bamber (New Zealand) and Frédéric Makowiecki (France) had fought their way up to second place during the two-hour, forty-minute race. However, in the final phase of the race they were unable to defend this position against the four other automobile manufacturers in the fiercely contested category. Their teammates Patrick Pilet (France) and Nick Tandy (Great Britain), the winners of Round Three of the GTLM season at Long Beach, finished in eighth-place. Porsche currently ranks third in the manufacturers' classification of North America's premier endurance sports car racing series.

The new Porsche 911 GT3 R of Team Seattle/Alex Job Racing tackled the race from pole position. The former Porsche junior Alex Riberas (Spain) defended his lead until the first pit stop, and his teammate Mario Farnbacher (Germany) also held the competition at bay for long periods with the 500 hp customer sports racer from Weissach. But with just one hour to the flag, their hopes of a second win after Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca were dashed when the 911 GT3 R lost a wheel. As the best Porsche customer team, Park Place Motorsports with works driver Jörg Bergmeister (Germany) and Patrick Lindsey (USA) took sixth-place.

"It was already evident after the practice that we would have a hard time on this track. We took up the race with different strategies for our two cars and we managed to work our way up the field. Thanks to fast pit stops at precisely the right time our number 912 contender even made it to second. Our drivers and the entire team again put in an immaculate performance today. When this effort only yields sixth place then of course you're not particularly happy. We'll now concentrate on the next round at Lime Rock Park and hope that we do better there."

"It was a difficult weekend for us. We now have to do everything to deliver a better performance at Lime Rock Park. When things don't go so smoothly then it's mostly due to bad luck - like at the pit stop when I accelerated while the car was still jacked up. It was a misunderstanding. The drive-through penalty cost us one or two positions."

Nick Tandy, Driver, No. 911 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR.

"Today we tried various tire strategies. Okay, it didn't pay off today, but we still gained important insights for the next races. Hopefully we can then fight amongst the frontrunners again."

“My stint was good with some interesting duels. Thanks to a perfect strategy and fast pit stops, the team managed to help us reach second place at one point. In the final phase Fred gave 110 percent to hold on to the position. Unfortunately it wasn't enough.”

"We can't blame ourselves. The team did a great job again and deserved better than sixth place. To match the pace of the others sometimes I had to take risks yet I was still overtaken in places where that would normally not be possible."

Lengthening The String. Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport Adds Another Podium

The Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport continued its string of podium finishes in the IMSA Continental Tire Sports Car Championship at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park on July 9. The No. 33 CJ Wilson Racing entry gave the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport its first-ever podium finish in its January debut at Daytona International Speedway and extended the podium string to five for five races this weekend. The second-place finish came at the hands of drivers Daniel Burkett (Canada) and Marc Miller (Holland, Michigan).

Having started second but falling back to third early, the No. 33, owned by Major League Baseball pitcher CJ Wilson, first retook second-place and then started the chase for the lead. Despite an attack of nearly the full two-hour, 40-minute race, the Miller came up just short of the race-winning Ford Shelby GT350R-C.

The No. 12 Bodymotion Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport, which took the car's inaugural win at Sebring International Raceway in March and followed with wins at the next two races as well, finished fourth after being forced to serve a penalty for an unapproved worker during a pit stop. Cameron Cassels (Canada) and Trent Hindman (Wayside, New Jersey) share the GS class Cayman.

"Strategy, the car, everything was pretty good. We took four tires they took two. We were able to close in and get one of the Mustangs. Ultimately all we could do was match the pace of the #15 car. Out of the box they were great all week. We came here having never tested here and to be honest it's great to leave here with a second, we lost some ground to the leaders in points but we are more solidly second in points now and we hope we can take this momentum into the next race at Lime Rock. We just need to keep doing what we are doing. We had maybe three potential wins taken from us this season, this would have been a tough one to get but the others really were in our clutches. We just have to go and win the next race and hope things sway back our way.

"We started P2 and finished P2. I think that is pretty much all we had for the Mutimatic car. On to Lime Rock and some redemption."

Cameron Cassels, Driver, No. 12 Bodymotion Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

"It was quite a race! It was definitely educational coming here. I learned a lot. I learned a lot more about myself and about car control. This is maybe not the best place to try to learn about car control, but it is what it is. You can't win them all. There are some things we know we have to work on so we won't have a repeat of some of the errors we made. But saying that, the guys worked their butts off from the time we unloaded for the test day until the checkered flag. No one gave up."

Trent Hindman, Driver, No. 12 Bodymotion Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

"Sometimes your luck runs out, and today just wasn't our day, unfortunately. But a big thank you to all the Bodymotion Racing guys for doing their best to bring us back. We were back on the lead lap for a little while there, but unfortunately we just made a couple mistakes that put us back further behind than we wanted to and out of contention for the win."
