Porsche Motorsport has a global footprint and at no time has that been proven more true than this past weekend. Every major Porsche racing program was on track over the course of the April 16-17 weekend. The Porsche North America factory team won the GTLM class at the Grand Prix of Long Beach in California with the No. 911 Team Porsche North America 911 RSR. Also at Long Beach, the fifth-round of the Pirelli World Challenge saw factory driver Patrick Long race to third-place in the EFFORT Racing 911 GT3 R. Meanwhile, at the Silverstone Circuit in England, the No. 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid won the race overall and the factory-supported Dempsey-Proton Racing Porsche 911 RSR finished sixth in the LMGTE-Pro class.
North America Gives Porsche First 911 RSR Win of 2016. Defending WeatherTech Champs Back in Victory Lane
The Porsche 911 RSR celebrated its first win of 2016 with a victory in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. On the Long Beach, California street circuit, the reigning IMSA GTLM champion Patrick Pilet (France) and outright Le Mans winner Nick Tandy (Great Britain) won the third race of the season in the No. 911 Porsche North America factory effort. With the 470 hp Porsche 911 RSR, which is based on the seventh generation of the iconic 911 sports car, the team overcame strong competition and self-imposed challenges in a thrilling charge to the checkered flag. This was the first win for a works-driver lineup in a 911 at Long Beach since 2010 when factory drivers Jörg Bergmeister (Germany) and Patrick Long (Manhattan Beach, California) won the American Le Mans Series GT class.
With this victory, Porsche has made-up ground in the manufacturers’ classification of North America’s premier endurance sports car racing series to sit just four points behind the leader in second place.
On lap 13, the No. 912 Porsche North America 911 RSR was running in the lead. Overall Le Mans winner Earl Bamber (New Zealand) held position one ahead of his team colleague Pilet. Pulling in to the pits after one hour, they handed the cars off to Tandy and Frédéric Makowiecki (France). Following the 100-minute race’s sole pit stop, each car was assessed a stop-and-go penalty for exceeding the speed limit in the pit lane. Clocking consistently fast lap times and aided by a safety car phase, the pair closed on the class leaders. Makowiecki, in the No. 912, however, missed a braking point fighting for position, hit the leading Corvette and was forced back into the pits with damage; the car ultimately classified in seventh-place. Meanwhile, Tandy was able to drive the No. 911 around the stationary ‘Vette taking the win.

Unfortunately we made it unnecessarily suspenseful for ourselves when we exceeded the speed limit in the pit lane with both 911 RSRs. Despite the penalty, we didn’t give up. For Porsche, the first victory at Long Beach in six years is an excellent result. Thank you to the whole team for their efforts and to Michelin for supplying excellent tires.”

“An incredible race. I got away well at the start, but Nick had problems during our pit stop with buckling the harness and we lost valuable seconds. Then we were penalized and lost more time. The race was a real rollercoaster with an unbelievably intense final phase. I’m sorry for our teammates in the 912 car, they drove a great race. But this time luck was on our side.”

“After two third places we finally had every opportunity to win today. But we didn’t use it. The first blow was the penalty for being too fast in the pit lane. The collision in the penultimate lap was my fault. I was a touch too optimistic heading into the corner.”
Long Podiums At Long Beach. Porsche Factory Driver Captures Third In Pirelli World Challenge
Street races are notorious for a lot of things - little run-off room, limited passing opportunities, bumpy track surfaces - but one of the greatest challenges to overcome is lack of track time. Even for experienced drivers like Patrick Long (Manhattan Beach, California), Michael Lewis (Laguna Beach, California), James Sofronas (Villa Park, California) and Andrew Davis (Athens, Georgia), one-hour and thirty-minutes of track time - including qualifying - leading into Sunday’s fifty-minute Pirelli World Challenge race is a major test of teams and drivers. Long and Sofronas are both previous winners on the Long Beach Grand Prix temporary street circuit - Long twice in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), Sofronas twice in World Challenge - while Lewis and Davis were both seeing the 1.98-mile, 12-turn circuit for the first time from behind the wheel of their respective Porsche 911 GT3 R race cars.
Long’s experience racing Porsches on street circuits proved extremely valuable. The Porsche “works” driver won here in 2009 and 2010 and tried hard in the No. 31 EFFORT Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R to return to the top-step. In the end, he’d fight for a third-place finish after qualifying fourth. Teammate Lewis, who won the last two races on the St. Petersburg street course, trailed just behind in sixth after starting in that same position in the No. 41 EFFORT Racing Porsche. Davis was making his debut on the wall-lined circuit but his day was cut short with damage to the right-front of the No. 76 Calvert Dynamics Porsche 911 GT3 R, finishing 13th in the GT class. Sofronas also fell out early taking home 16th in GT.

“Third-place was a strong result for what we had. Today we hit our full potential. We had a really good start, and on the first restart, I went for the lead and wasn’t left any room at the exit. Unfortunately, we slipped back to third and just had to settle in and get into a groove. It was pretty treacherous there at the end with fluid on the track. I was relieved to hold on the podium and get the season back on track.”

At Silverstone, the World Endurance Championship (WEC) race was something to see - and wasn’t over until a few hours after the checkered flag dropped.
Approximately two-hours into the six-hour contest, factory driver Brendon Hartley (New Zealand) had a major incident with a customer Porsche 911 RSR, which was racing in the LMGTE-Am class. As the No. 1 Porsche 919 Hybrid attempted to pass, the two cars touched, sending the LMP1 car airborne. Both drivers walked away from the crash unhurt, but neither car was able to return to competition. The No. 1 919 Hybrid is the reigning World Champion - co-driven by Timo Bernhard (Germany), Mark Webber (Australia) and Hartley.
At the end, the new No. 7 Audi R18 crossed the finish line first. However, a few hours later it was announced that Audi had failed the post-race technical inspection. The front skid plate was found to be worn beyond regulations, and was disqualified. Audi is appealing the decision but, currently, the No. 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid driven by Romain Dumas France), Neil Jani (Switzerland) and Marc Lieb (Germany) is classified the winner of the opening round of the 2016 World Endurance Championship.
Round Two will be held at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps Circuit in Belgium on May 7th. The six-hour race will be the immediate precursor to the 24 Hours of Le Mans, scheduled for June 18-19.
All In the Family. Calvert Dynamics Is All About Family
Preston Calvert (Potomac, Maryland) first met Andrew Davis (Athens, Georgia) at Barber Motorsports Park during a class at the Porsche Sport Driving School. Calvert utilized Davis’ private coaching to further develop his skill set, and the two created a friendship beyond their professional relationship. It was this friendship that spawned the idea of a two-car Calvert Dynamics team in the Pirelli World Challenge. This weekend, Calvert returns to the picturesque Alabama track in the No. 77 911 GT3 Cup to compete in the GT Cup class, while Davis will use his knowledge of the Barber facility to challenge in the GT class with the No. 76 Porsche 911 GT3 R.
The pairing is the most visible part of the family team Preston and Meg Calvert, run, Calvert Dynamics, LLC. The couple leans on one-another, enjoying the pursuit of a dream. The message spreads throughout every aspect of the team down to the numbering of the pair of Porsche racecars. Davis’ car number, “76”, recognizes the year the couple met, 1976, while Calvert’s own car carries “77”, the year they were married.
Further strengthening the family feel of the team is Joe Aquilante, owner of Phoenix Performance, and his son Andrew, team manager for the program. With the two families combined, it is the strong relationships between the tight-knit crew that makes this one of the closest teams in the Pirelli World Challenge paddock.

“The great thing about the Calvert Dynamics/Phoenix Performance team is that it is a family environment. It is a very cohesive group. To me, that kind of support breeds results over time. We have really come together as a Porsche team. My relationship with Preston started with the Porsche Sport Driving School, and grew when he called me last year to see if I would help him with his new 911 GT3 Cup car. We developed a strong relationship and Preston had such great results that midway through the season we started talking about this opportunity to drive the Calvert Dynamics Porsche 911 GT3 R. I am proud to represent what this team stands for not only on, but off the track as well.
I consider Barber my second ‘home’ race track. Road Atlanta is my home because that is where I live but I probably have more laps around Barber than anywhere else. I know the track suits our car very well and I expect to continue the momentum we’ve had in Pirelli World Challenge with a good result there.”

Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama not only offers top professional race weekends featuring the Pirelli World Challenge, a world-class auto and motorcycle museum and perhaps the best collection of exotic trees and plants anywhere, but it is the home of the Porsche Sport Driving School (PSDS) since the track opened in 2003. Participants get the opportunity to pilot the latest Porsche models: 911 Carrera S, Boxster S, Cayman S, Panamera Turbo, Cayenne (in a challenging off-road environment) and experience the Porsche 911 Turbo S. Whether the participant owns a Porsche or not, he or she is exposed to the most highly refined performance driver training methods and techniques available. Attendees become more efficient and safer drivers.
PSDS is also a great starting point for those interested in entering formal racing competition. Under the guidance of Porsche Certified instructors, such as Andrew Davis (Athens, Georgia), driver of the No. 76 Calvert Dynamics Porsche 911 GT3 R, participants learn not only the basics, but the fine points of the performance driving as well. Perfecting the most efficient driving line, the importance of being smooth, trail braking techniques, heel/toe downshifting and refining car control skills are part of the curriculum. There are many different programs - including a women’s only weekend and a Precision Couples Driving package - all with emphasis on maximum track time to enhance the driving experience.
