Past Champion Patrick Long Returns to Pirelli World Challenge.
Porsche factory driver Patrick Long (Manhattan Beach, California) returns to the Pirelli World Challenge seeking his second GT class driver's championship in 2016. The 2011 World Challenge Champion has not raced in the series since taking the title five years ago. Long joins a strengthened commitment by Porsche to North America's premier "sprint" format sports car racing series. The introduction of the current Porsche 911 GT3 R – based on the seventh-generation of the iconic rear-engined sports car – gives the United States' only Porsche "works" driver the car to go head-to-head with Johnny O'Connell who, racing a Cadillac, has captured every championship since Long left the series.

Long, driving the No. 31 EFFORT Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R, will reunite with team engineer Stefan Pfeiffer. The pair first found success together with Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and with two American Le Mans Series GT2 titles. From there, they traveled to Flying Lizard Motorsports where they added two more championships to the tally. Long and Pfeiffer have also become an intricate part of Porsche Motorsport North America's (PMNA) search for driver talent on the continent. Joined by other key personnel at IMSA, Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) and PMNA, the duo has helped select and guide up-and-coming talent at the annual Porsche Young Driver Academy. One such talent that benefited from the Young Driver Academy is Michael Lewis (Laguna Beach, California). Lewis, a 2014 "graduate" of the program, returns to EFFORT Racing in the No. 41 Porsche 911 GT3 R after a standout season in World Challenge in 2015.

Porsche Introduces New 911 GT3 R to North America's Premier Sports Car Sprint Series.
North America will again be the site of a unique debut for Porsche. For the first time anywhere, the Porsche 911 GT3 R will race in full FIA-specifications at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) Pirelli World Challenge season-opening weekend, March 5-6. The car was conceived and developed to be Porsche's entry in international sprint GT car racing, commonly referred to as GT3. As the beneficiary of the globe's earliest 2016 races, North America earns "first dibs" on premieres of the new car, which utilizes Porsche's latest 4.0-liter direct injection engine. Porsche Motorsport North America successfully introduced the race-going variant of the seventh-generation 911 to endurance racing when Black Swan Racing ran to a podium finish in the Rolex 24 At Daytona in late January. Factory driver Patrick Long (Manhattan Beach, California) was part of the driver roster on that squad giving North America's only Porsche "works" driver a position as one of the most experienced pilots of the new car.

For the GT class – reserved for professional drivers – EFFORT Racing brings a two-car team to fight for the COTA race victory and season title with the No. 31 driven by Long and the No. 41 by defending COTA GTA class-winner Michael Lewis (Laguna Beach, California). GMG Racing have entered James Sofronas (Villa Park, California) and Brent Holden (Newport Beach, California) in the No. 14 Porsche 911 GT3 R while veteran Porsche race-winner Andrew Davis (Athens, Georgia) will be behind the wheel of the No. 76 entry for Calvert Dynamics. The sole amateur racing a Porsche 911 GT3 R at COTA will be Michael Schein (Glen Cove, New York) campaigning the No. 16 Wright Motorsports entry in the GT Amateur (GTA) class.

GT Cup Class: The One-Make Class That Stands Alone.
Porsche has long been known for its one-make series. Currently, 20 Cup/Challenge series are contested worldwide utilizing the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car – North America has two of the championships racing as the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama and the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama. At the pinnacle of the Cup pyramid is the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup series, which runs in support of the Formula One World Championship. Starting in 2014, the Porsche GT Cup class joined the Pirelli World Challenge as a one-make race within the GT/GTA races utilizing the Supercup rulebook exactly. The scenario of a single-brand, single-driver class within a multi-class, sprint-race format is unique to the Pirelli World Challenge GT Cup and gives young, up-and-coming drivers in North America an opportunity to balance the benefits of even competition within their class with the challenges of being overtaken by much higher-horsepower machines – such as the Porsche 911 GT3 R. Competing with the world's most prodigious racecar – approximately 250 new 911 GT3 Cup cars are produced every year for worldwide distribution – while being mindful of the quicker classes which use a variety of cars proves one of the most effective training grounds for multi-class sports car racing available in North America.

Porsche Point of View.

Jens Walther, President/CEO, Porsche Motorsport North America
"We are proud our North American customer programs continue to provide Porsche with the perfect combination of venue, teams and drivers to debut our newest race products. This will be the first time the Porsche 911 GT3 R will compete under exact international FIA GT3 rules so there is much interest in what the four customer entries will find on a track similar to what the car will see elsewhere in the world. Additionally, the GT Cup category, using the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, provided some of the most intense one-make competition anywhere in the world last year and we expect that to continue in 2016. Porsche is opening a new season of Pirelli World Challenge with a great commitment to the series. We are very excited to face both the manufacturer and privateer competition in a very intense sprint race format."

Patrick Long, Driver, No. 31 EFFORT Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R
"The Pirelli World Challenge has changed night-and-day since I won the driver's title in 2011. The entire landscape of the series has progressed exponentially since then so I am not walking in thinking they will just hand me the title. However, at EFFORT Racing, I am with one of the top teams in the GT class. I have a teammate in Michael Lewis who is a proven winner and we have the new Porsche 911 GT3 R. We won't have many miles on the new car before we arrive at COTA but Porsche has done a great job testing this car extensively in all kinds of situations. It performed flawlessly when we podiumed with Black Swan at Daytona so I think we will be up to speed pretty quickly when we arrive in Austin. We'll need to be because the goal is the championship and the competition isn't going to wait on us."

Alec Udell, Driver, No. 17 GMG Porsche 911 GT3 Cup
"I am very excited to be returning back to the Porsche GT Cup category in Pirelli World Challenge. The season opener happens to be in my home state of Texas on one of the most iconic tracks of the continent, Circuit of the Americas. The GT Cup category in Pirelli World Challenge is different than most Cup series out there since it races with both GT Cup cars and GT3 cars, pairing the high level of competition within a spec series with the intensity of a multiple brand battle. There is always a fight going on track and often times those fights coincide with each other, creating a dynamic unlike any other in motorsports!"
