Porsche Motorsport Legend Honored at California Festival of Speed. PMNA Consultant Springer Named Festival's Grand Marshall

While the public most often remembers the drivers' names, Porsche has the unique distinction of having readily recognizable engineering 'celebrities' as well. One such individual is Alwin Springer. In fact, Springer's reputation is so strong, the now retired but still active racing expert, was named Grand Marshal for the 2015 California Festival of Speed, held this past weekend at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. The native of Germany but longtime Southern California-resident first grew to fame with ANDIAL, a company he co-founded in the Los Angeles-area to prepare Porsche racecars and import official Porsche parts. ANDIAL would go on to become the preeminent builder of Porsche racing engines in North America, most remembered as the tuner of the turbocharged, flat-six engine that powered the Porsche 962 to legendary status. Springer himself would later manage Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA) for well over a decade and remains a very active consultant to PMNA. ANDIAL was purchased by Porsche in 2013 and currently is overseeing a number of specialty and historic projects for the marque.

The California Festival of Speed, presented by Porsche of San Diego, is a special gathering of high performance automobiles each year at Auto Club Speedway that offers an extensive array of automotive attractions. This year's event featured Porsche new car test drives, on-track competition races, special parking "corrals" for each Porsche model, a Porsche swap meet, a concours d'elegance and a wide-ranging vendor's row with more than 50 companies. Fans were also able to try the latest electronic driving simulators.

Anniversary Celebration on the Beach. The Porsche-Team Falken Tire Relationship Began at Long Beach in 2009

This weekend's Tequila Patrón Sports Car Showcase at Long Beach is a milestone for Team Falken Tire. The sole customer program running the Porsche 911 RSR in North America made its Porsche debut on the streets of Southern California in 2009. It was the first time the combination of Falken Tire and Porsche 911, then a Porsche 911 GT3 RSR based on the sixth-generation of the iconic rear-engine sports car, was ever raced on this continent. Falken ran a three-race schedule that season with the first event coming here at Long Beach. The street race also marked Bryan Sellers (Braselton, Georgia) signing as a Falken Tire factory driver - he co-drove the limited '09 American Le Mans Series schedule with Dominic Cisneros. Porsche factory driver Wolf Henzler (Germany) joined the effort in 2010 and the pairing of Henzler-Sellers-Falken-Porsche has proven formidable with five major sports car victories (2014: Petit Le Mans, '13: Petit Le Mans, '12: Baltimore, '11: Mid-Ohio, Baltimore) coming since that time. Most recently, the team captured a podium at the last TUDOR Championship race, a third in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Bryan Sellers, No. 17 Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR: "From my perspective, Team Falken Tire has grown into a solid top-tier program. I have been fortunate to be paired with the same guys for a long time and getting to work with them is a great pleasure. Since that first race, our main areas of improvement have come in our communication. Our ability for all levels of the program to be involved with each other and work cohesively... that is something that can only develop with time."

No Limits. Limited Pirelli World Challenge Track Time Plays to EFFORT Racing's Favor

If you look at the event schedule for this weekend's Long Beach Grand Prix, you might think that it unfairly punishes the Pirelli World Challenge. With only one-hour and 30-minutes of track time - including qualifying and the warm-up - before Sunday afternoon's one-hour race, the teams have little time to find the sweet spot in the cars. The single practice comes on Friday morning and is only 45-minutes in length. One red flag and the drivers could enter qualifying, or even the race, with almost no laps under their belts. However, that could play to the advantage of EFFORT Racing. The team and its lead driver in the No. 31 Porsche 911 GT3 R, Ryan Dalziel (Scotland) have extensive experience on the street circuit to draw on and teammate Michael Lewis is from nearby Laguna Beach, California. Therefore, when others might be left scratching their heads, the EFFORT team could be in an ideal position.

Ryan Dalziel, No. 31 EFFORT Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R: "I think the limited track time will be an advantage for us. I have a lot of experience at Long Beach, EFFORT Racing is an amazingly well prepared team and the Porsche 911 GT3 R is very good on street courses so I expect us to be fast out of the gate. Hopefully the limited track time slows others progress to catch us."

Porsche History. Long Beach Grand Prix

2007 - Timo Bernhard/Romain Dumas - Porsche RS Spyder - ALMS Overall/LMP2 win
2009 - Joerg Bergmeister/Patrick Long - Porsche 911 GT3 RSR - ALMS GT2 class
2009 - James Sofronas - Porsche 911 GT3 Cup - World Challenge GT class
2010 - Joerg Bergmeister/Patrick Long - Porsche 911 GT3 RSR - ALMS GT2 class
2012 - Jack Baldwin - Porsche Cayman - World Challenge GTS class

Porsche Point of View.

Bryan Sellers, Driver, No. 17 Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR, TUDOR Championship, GTLM class

"The limited track time you get here makes the previous Long Beach races Team Falken Tire has done that much more important. You have to rely on your experience as a program to help lead you through the race. So much of the work for Long Beach is done leading up to the weekend. Rolling off the truck strong seems to be the largest influencing factor of how your weekend will go. We have the good fortune of having a Porsche. The 911 RSR really excels in many areas, but it is especially strong in putting the power down. Street courses are generally like a drag race: put the power down early and efficient and drag to the next corner. That alone makes the Porsche a force to be reckoned with at Long Beach."

Jens Walther, President/CEO, Porsche Motorsport North America

"When you look at the major motorsport events in the world, you have to include the Long Beach Grand Prix on that list. Southern California has such a large influence over the rest of the world culturally, particularly the car culture, that this is a spotlight event. It is certainly an important event for Porsche customers. While we do not have the Porsche 911 GT America teams here this weekend, we have the Porsche North America factory team and Team Falken Tire racing the Porsche 911 RSR in Saturday's Tudor Championship race. On Sunday, EFFORT Racing will campaign the Porsche 911 GT3 R and nine GT Cup competitors will drive Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars in the Pirelli World Challenge. That, in addition to this being the home race for PMNA, underlines the significance of the Long Beach Grand Prix to Porsche."

Ryan Dalziel, Driver, No. 31 EFFORT Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R, Pirelli World Challenge GT class

"I think this will be our best race as a series so far in 2015! Long Beach brings an excitement and prestige that not many circuits in the USA can deliver. I'm really hoping we can get our first overall win of 2015 for Porsche and EFFORT Racing this weekend. What better place!"
