Endurance vs. Sprint. The Challenges of Porsche Disciplines
Drivers who are versatile, competing in different cars with different sanctioning bodies with different length races, are often asked to compare the challenges of endurance racing (anything over an hour with more than one driver sharing a car) versus sprint racing. For Ryan Dalziel (Scotland), who will be driving the No. 31 EFFORT Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R at Sonoma, the intensity level is the same, but for very different reasons. In endurance racing, like the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship which Dalziel is a regular in the Prototype class, from the first practice on the first day, the driver is constantly considering what the strategy for the race will be and what the car will handle like for multiple stints and fuel loads. Also, each driver has to consider what his or her teammate thinks of the car. The final race setup is often a compromise between teammates. When it comes to sprint races, such as this weekend's twin Pirelli World Challenge events, the driver can become somewhat selfish again. It's just driver, the car and the race. With short distances, there is no stress about pit stops or strategy. It's just flat-out, qualifying laps for 50 minutes.
There is no doubt that whether its sprint or endurance, both are equally as difficult but in their own unique ways. Dalziel won both ends of the Pirelli World challenge doubleheader two weeks ago at Mid-Ohio in his EFFORT Racing Porsche.
Baldwin Country. Sonoma Raceway Success for Veteran Driver
Jack Baldwin (Marietta, Georgia) has had a good deal of success at the 1.99-mile Sonoma Raceway circuit over the years. The veteran driver of the No. 73 GTSport Racing Porsche Cayman S is the current track record folder for the GTS class. He holds the track record for the fastest qualifying lap, a one-minute, 43.127-second circuit, en route to the pole in 2012 driving a Cayman S. He is also a past winner on the track including racing to the 1983 IMSA Camel GTU class victory with Joe Varde. Showing Baldwin has not lost a step in his impressive career, by comparison, Ryan Dalziel was just one year-old at that time.
