Indianapolis. In another extremely competitive qualifying battle between manufacturer programs in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, Porsche North America placed its two works Porsche 911 RSRs eighth and ninth at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The GT Le Mans (GTLM) class entries were less than 0.750 seconds off the pole winning time for Friday's Brickyard Grand Prix.

Porsche 911 RSR

Michael Christensen (Denmark) qualified the No. 912 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR eighth in class. His time of one-minute, 22.938-seconds was a narrow 0.560 seconds off the fastest qualifying time set by the No. 62 Ferrari F458 Italia. The Dane's teammate, Nick Tandy (Great Britain), was ninth with a best lap of 1:23.101. The quickest Porsche 911 RSR was the No. 17 Team Falken Tire car driven by American Bryan Sellers. The Braselton, Georgia-resident's time of 1:22.730 was good for seventh on the grid for the 5:30 p.m. ET start.

After reviewing the results of recent events, IMSA, the sanctioning body for the TUDOR Championship, gave the iconic rear-engine sports car a "Balance of Performance" adjustment entering this weekend's two-hour, 45-minute race in Indianapolis. However, the limited time between the last round at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park and today's first on-track session on the 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course prohibited Porsche Motorsport from developing and testing the new package adequately to meet performance and safety standards of the German company. Specifically, the necessity to design and test the completely new rear wing to insure not only correct performance but safety of the wing, mandated that none of the three Porsche 911 RSRs entered run the new package here.

Porsche 911 GT America

In the GT Daytona class, the fastest Porsche 911 GT America will start fifth on the grid. Germany's Mario Farnbacher qualified the No. 23 Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 GT America that he will share with Ian James (Phoenix, Arizona) with a time of 1:26.271. Jan Heylen (Tampa, Florida) was seventh in the Snow Racing Porsche co-driven by Madison Snow (Lehi, Utah). Leh Keen (Atlanta) was tenth in the No. 22 Alex Job Racing Porsche he drives with Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, Illinois). All six drivers are still within striking distance of the GT Daytona point lead, along with No. 44 Magnus Racing Porsche 911 GT America. Andy Lally (Dacula, Georgia) and John Potter (Salt Lake City, Utah), who qualified 13th in their Porsche, are second in the standings only three points back from the lead entering tomorrow's race.

Michael Christensen, No. 912 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR: "I like the demanding parts of this track. Turns eight, nine and ten are very challenging. The corner I like the most is turn four, coming into five-six. We are still working on the balance. It is still not as I want it. We will fine-tune it for the race. We will focus more on the car being balanced over a stint than speed."

Nick Tandy, No. 911 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR: "The first flying lap I expected more grip. There wasn't and I slid off the circuit. We missed a chance to do a fast lap. I am disappointed in my mistake that cost us on the rest of the qualifying session."

Bryan Sellers, No. 17 Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR: "We were fairly happy with our qualifying run. I felt like we could have gone a bit quicker but the tires came in too fast and that didn't give me an opportunity to get the maximum grip levels from them. Our focus will be solely on the race and trying to make it to the end of a stint and still have good pace."

Mario Farnbacher, No. 23 Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 GT America: "The test that we had here at the end of June really helped our team. The Indy road circuit is very technical, and the proper set-up of the car is key to going fast. The Alex Job team has the car handling really well. A third row starting position is good, but we are focused now on a good race car for tomorrow's event."

Owen Hayes, Director of Operations, Porsche Motorsport North America: "I was hoping we'd get a little more out of it. We have not had a chance to bolt on our new Balance of Performance package because it was quite difficult to get the rear wing produced in time. That obviously has a knock on effect. The rear wing is not something we just bolt on. It has to be tried and tested and the changes came with very short notice. Without using the rear wing, the front spoiler lip cannot be put on because the car will be out of aerodynamic balance then. The air restrictor modification we were not able to put on because it is an all or nothing package. We were hoping the track would come to us a little bit. This is a circuit which is very similar to Daytona and Sebring and we thought we'd gained a bit of ground but it seems the others also made a bit more ground during the year as well."
