Porsche Profile. Event Story Lines
Tandy Added to World Challenge EFFORT.
Porsche factory driver Nick Tandy (Great Britain) will join EFFORT Racing at Toronto this weekend. The second-year works driver will campaign the No. 31 EFFORT Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R as the operation attempts to get a better handle on the car's unique to North America characteristics.
According to Ricki Martino, crew chief for EFFORT Racing, the Porsche 911 GT3 R features a unique tire package when raced in the Pirelli World Challenge, so EFFORT is on its own to face the challenges of compound, setup and approach at each of the various race courses the team competes on in North America. This has made it necessary for EFFORT Racing and Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA) to continually develop the handling nuances of the 911 GT3 R, the European endurance specialist.
To help bridge the gap, Tandy - who races the No. 911 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR in TUDOR United SportsCar Championship as well as in other international events - has joined the team as a consultant. The Brit, who in addition to winning the Rolex 24 At Daytona earlier this year in the factory Porsche North America entry as well as the Petit Le Mans in 2013 with Team Falken Tire, has numerous race wins in the 911 GT3 R in the British GT Championship and in VLN competition at the Nürburgring. In 2012, prior to becoming a works driver, Porsche Motorsport named Tandy the Porsche Cup recipient for the most successful Porsche privateer driver in the world.
The team's regular pro driver, Tim Bergmeister (Germany) will step out for the weekend. Bergmeister had his best finishes of the 2014 season racing to third and fifth, respectively, in the two World Challenge races at the most recent weekend at Road America.
Porsche Cup Challenge Canada. The one make comes to Toronto.
The Ultra94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin features the latest version of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, based on the seventh generation of the Porsche 911 streetcar. The racecar, which debuted in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup a year ago, has come to North America this year and will be featured in the Platinum class of the race in Toronto. As the car was designed to run on street courses all over the world in Supercup's role as a Formula 1 support series, several of the new features on the car make it adapt well to these unique circuits. Perhaps the biggest change is the move from manual stick for the sequential shift transmission to steering wheel paddle shifters. This enables the driver to keep both hands on the wheel while shifting - critical to car control. Adding to the driver control tools is the significantly stiffer racecar tub, giving the car quicker handling response. Finally, during the development of the new car, a particular emphasis was put on the driver safety. A newly designed safety cage protects the pilot in case of a roll or a collision as does a newly developed race seat which is distinctively shaped around the head and shoulders and can be adjusted individually with the help of padding. A rescue hatch in the roof provides easy access for primary medical attention and quick extraction of the driver.

Porsche Point of View.
Jens Walther, President/CEO, Porsche Motorsport North America
"It is always a pleasure to be able to compete at a premier event like the Grand Prix of Toronto. To have the opportunity to bring the Ultra94 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin and our World Challenge customer teams to compete on this stage is a testimony to both organizations. The Canadian fans are very knowledgeable and appreciate the close nature of the competition of both series and in the long history of Porsche. Our motorsport customers also appreciate this enthusiasm and it adds to the significance of racing in the heart of Toronto."
Ilker Starck, No. 48 SCB Racing/Downtown PorscheUltra94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin
"As the owner of a sportscar tuning and race preparation shop in Toronto, racing through the streets we all drive on every day is very exciting. This is the third year for me in the Ultra 94 Porsche series, but it is the first year for all of us through the streets of Toronto. The course walk for drivers will be very important, as you can start to visualize the turn-ins and braking points, and see where the surface might change from cement to asphalt, etc. Although we wanted a new car this year, Porsche was sold out and we are running last year's car again, but this becomes an advantage a new course as it's one less thing we have to learn. I am excited to go 140 mph on streets where we can usually on go 50 mph max."
Jack Baldwin, Driver, No. 73 GTSport Racing Porsche Cayman S
"Our effort at GTSport Racing centers around our team as a whole, but when it comes to set up it's the communication that I have with our engineer Steve Ruiz, and the ability of crew chief Bob Sanderson to execute the changes quickly and efficiently. Working together we have developed some excellent set-ups to challenge the bumps of the street courses as well as smoother and faster permanent road courses. Our set-ups are very precise and include the smallest changes in tire pressures, shocks adjustments and sway bar combinations to maximize the ability of our Caymans handling and give me what I need to run up front and win for our team, sponsors and Porsche. This year we have focused on managing the bumps at speed so based on our Detroit set-up we should roll off the trailer with a great car in Toronto."
