New Leader. Porsche Announces Walliser as VP of Motorsport
Dr. Frank-Steffen Walliser has been named as the new Vice President of Motorsport at Porsche AG effective October 1. In this role the Stuttgart native will be responsible for the worldwide GT racing activities as well as for GT production sports car such as the 911 GT3. He is the successor to Hartmut Kristen who will work with the Research and Development Board in an advisory role.
Kristen joined Porsche in 1983 and has been responsible for customer racing activities and GT vehicles since 1994. In 2004, he became Vice President of Porsche Motorsport.
Walliser held the position of General Manager of Motorsport Strategies from 2003 to 2008 and as the overall project manager of the 918 Spyder since November 2010. He will retain oversight of the 918 Spyder. As the Vice President of Porsche Motorsport, Dr. Walliser is responsible for the worldwide motorsport activities in the GT field as well as for GT production sports cars. Fritz Enzinger will continue at the helm of the LMP1 campaign and the running of the Porsche 919 Hybrid in the Sports Car World Championship WEC and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Like many things that Porsche has done in racing over the years, the Porsche Motorsport factory driver program has become a role model emulated by manufacturers around the globe. Of the 15 drivers who carry full "works" driver status piloting either a Porsche 911 RSR or the Porsche 919 Hybrid, a third of those will be racing this weekend in the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Nick Tandy (Great Britain) and Richard Lietz (Austria) share the No. 911 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR while the No. 912 has North America's only Porsche full factory driver, Patrick Long of Playa del Rey, California and the newest Porsche driver, Michael Christensen (Denmark) sharing the seat of the official factory entry. Germany's Wolf Henzler continues his role in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championships only non-factory entered Porsche 911 RSR, the No. 17 Team Falken Tire car he campaigns with Bryan Sellers (Braselton, Georgia). Thus far in 2014, Tandy and Lietz, along with France's Patrick Pilet have won the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class at the Rolex 24 At Daytona to open the season. Christensen, Long and German Jörg Bergmeister raced the No. 912 to the same class victory at the next race, the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. Henzler has multiple-top five GTLM finishes thus far.
In total, including the endurance races to open the season, 14 works drivers, either full factory or "junior" program drivers have raced in the 2014 Tudor Championship GTLM and GT Daytona (GTD) classes. The 24 Hours at Daytona was the largest single race gathering of factory drivers in Porsche history with 14 including Timo Bernhard (Germany) and Marc Lieb (Germany) of the Porsche 919 Hybrid Prototype One (P1) effort.

New to Porsche, Not to Sportscars. GB Autosport
GB Autosport might be new to the Porsche customer racing entries for the 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship in the GT Daytona class, but team owner Michael Avenatti and Team Manager Cole Scogham are not first-timers at the motorsports game. Avenatti, a Los Angeles-based attorney who recently took a controlling interest in Global Baristas, LLC - makers of Tully's Coffee in Seattle - started racing in 2011 in the American Le Mans Series GT Challenge class with Competition Motorsports' Bob Faieta (Tujunga, California). Scrogham is a long-time crew chief and team manager in the sport.
The team has shown right from the beginning they are serious contenders with their Porsche 911 GT America, first hiring Irish GT specialist Damien Faulkner to drive, and now British Porsche Supercup driver Ben Barker. Barker, who joined the team at Watkins Glen, was called in late to fill for Avenatti this weekend after the GB Autosport team principal sustained a back injury in a non-racing incident. The Tully's Coffee Porsche has two eighth-place finishes (Laguna Seca and The Glen) so far this year. Faulkner is 11th in the GTD driver standings.

"Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is the track with the highest average speed on our schedule. The only track similar in Europe is the Nürburgring Nordschleife which is in a few points similar. There are also fast turns, it is hilly as well and has some hidden apexes when you turn in. Both tracks have turns where you don't want to spin off. It is mostly fast turns, some you don't even see the apex when you start to turn-in because it is going over hills. Although there is a long uphill backstraight, we setup our cars with maximum downforce to get the best speed in these fast turns. For sure this helps to give us a more stable car in the braking zones and a more comfortable feeling in the turns, but a race, even an endurance race, is never a easy, we always push the car to the limit."

"For me, the difference between my season this year with Alex Job and Team Seattle is that I am not just a driver. I have had a role in determining the make-up and structure of the team, and that has been very rewarding, especially since car owner, Gabe Newell, has covered all the racing expenses for the season, allowing us to concentrate on raising money for Seattle Children's Hospital. We have not been one of the favorites all year, but we came close to winning at Sebring and finished second at Detroit; in fact, Mario Farnbacher and I are only seven points out of third place in the GTD standings.
